Overview

Around the Sun Valley area you will find miles of trails and some old logging roads which are great for offroading either on an ATV or 4x4. ATV’s are usually four wheel open vehicles not licensed for road use. They are used to get off the beaten path and to explore those areas less traveled.

Where to go ATV and Offroading

Both the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management provide maps for ATV – approved trails in the area. Some of the hiking trails in the area are also designated for motorcycle use. Always check ahead before taking off on your motorized off road vehicle.

Due to the fact that the Sun Valley area is so close to the massive wilderness area of Idaho, there are limited areas to ride. No motorized vehicles area allowed in the wilderness area. A few rides in some of the outlying areas are listed below:

• Mackay Mines Trail
  Located just outside of Mackay – a short distance from Sun Valley is you make use of the Trail Creek Road. Trails go all over the place, so you will have no shortage of fun. The southern most trail crossing a trestle bridge.
• Copper Basin
  This trail is usually very rocky. It can also be found in the MacKay area. The scenery is some of the most beautiful the world has to offer. The trails are well marked...just follow the signs. You will see several lakes, so bring a fishing pole.
• Challis Trails
  There are plenty of places to camp or stay, and plenty of good ATV trails to keep you busy for the weekend. There is a lot of mining history to see and lots of beautiful country.

The dealers who rent the ATV's can provide you with a guide or supply you with all the information you will need to find your own way.
